Visual Description
Untitled is a mixed media painting on canvas created by David Choe in 2004. It measures three feet tall by three feet wide. This square painting depicts a face with a flurry of quick and sporadic brushstrokes, as if it were a phantom arising from a cloud of smoke. The marks range from wide swaths of cream, yellow, and fleshy pinks across the middle of the surface to create cheeks, chin, nose and forehead. Wet inky blacks outline a half-lidded dark gray eye with black eyebrow on the top left. The eye on the right disappears behind black spraypainted marks that melt into short wide yellow marks and circular rust-colored brushstrokes. A singular spraypainted line of black forms the top lip while the bottom lip has quick and shorter dry brushstrokes to represent fullness and volume. The outline of the face evaporates into random, dripping and wide brushstrokes. Gold and black spraypainted squiggles seem to explode outward from the face to meet lightly stenciled patterns at the edges of the raw canvas.
