If you say so is a sculpture made by Jim Drain in 2010. It is assembled with welded steel, machine knit textiles, crocheted mohair, embroidery, wood, enamel, and latex paint. The sculpture’s dimensions are variable, meaning that its overall size depends on the site where it installed. If you say so is an abstract assemblage sculpture. Assemblages are made by grouping together a series of found or unrelated objects. In this case, the sculpture consists of several welded metal poles that form an overall skeleton to which brightly colored, soft woven elements are attached. This skeletal structure teeters across the floor, seeming to defy gravity. On the furthest left or frontmost part, a medical crutch supports the main body of the sculpture. A metal pole meets the tip of a large bundle of fabric in the space of the medical crutch typically reserved for a human arm. The metal pole—which is about the diameter of a street sign—shoots upwards and has another metal pole attached to its tip, forming an upside-down L. At the end of the L shape, an antenna-like rod with short white hairs or feathers on its end looks like a duster. Below, the large bundle of fabric resting on the medical crutch is crocheted with a series of patterns and bright colors. Bulbous shapes emerge from the side of the bag covered in checkered patterns, baby pinks, fuchsia and emerald green. Neon pink and purple beads hang from the sides, nearly touching the floor. This bag is supported by two poles that are joined by a gray metal plate that teeters on its corner towards the right. Another series of metal poles emerge from the legs that connect to the metal plate, like branches of a tree. The poles are embellished with more colorful woven objects in the back furthest from the viewer. On the tail end or furthest right, a cement block teeters on its corner towards the left. A hot pink chain is attached to the cement block and zigzags as if it were frozen in place.
